Donate to the church fabric

Rising like a phoenix from the site where the previous church was bombed during that second world war, St Paul’s Bow Common is an architectural gem.

It captures the energy and vision of a post-war London, seeking new and alternative ways of being and of worship. The church is seen by many as the best representation of the ideas and thoughts of the Liturgical Movement of the 1960s and is one of the few remaining brutalist churches left in London.

It launched the careers of two architects, Robert Maguire and Keith Murray who went on to design many churches across the country.

Ralph Beyer’s dramatic lettering can be found on the entrance to the porch – Gate of Heaven. Ralph went on to work at Coventry Cathedral after his time with us.

We have what many consider the largest single mosaic in Britain, designed and developed by Charles Lutyens (nephew of Sir Edwin Lutyens). The work represents the heavenly host and adds drama to worship.

Renewing Heating and Lighting (£300,000)

The church is delightful from May – September. The heating and lighting have reached the end of their lives. The church is very concerned that visitors and worshippers are met with a building as warm as the welcome that is given.

Resurfacing our forecourt (£30,000)

Car+pArk+2.jpg

Access to the church is not easy for wheelchair users as the forecourt has a pea gravel surface. Resurfacing this area would enable all to easily enter the church.

Replacing to our font lid (£3,000)

We have a beautiful font lid that cannot be attached as the mechanism needs to be stress-tested costing approximately £3,000.

With your gift, you could help us restore the font to its former glory and add to the joy of baptismal families.

It would be great to hold our first baptism with the font cover attached by Easter 2022.

Donations to the church’s Fabric Fund will help to ensure that we are able to restore and maintain this beautiful building.
